Do you have a dog or a cat in Brossard? In most cases, the City requires an annual licence. Here are the rules, prices and deadline to keep in mind.
Dog licence
- Mandatory for all dogs, every year. In Quebec, every dog must also be registered with its municipality.
- Cost: $37. A reduced rate applies to spayed/neutered and microchipped dogs. Recognized service dogs get their licence free of charge.
- Expiry: the licence expires every year on July 1, regardless of the purchase date. A licence bought in April therefore expires on June 30.
- Tag: mailed to you a few days after purchase. Your dog must wear it at all times when outdoors.
- Fines: $250 to $750 for a first offence, $500 to $1,500 for a repeat offence.
Cat licence
- Mandatory for cats that go outdoors. A cat that never goes out doesn’t need one.
- Cost: $20 per cat. It’s free for a microchipped and spayed/neutered cat.
- Expiry: July 1 every year, same as for dogs.
- Fines: $100 to $1,000 for a first offence, $200 to $2,000 for a repeat offence.
How to buy it
You can buy or renew your licence online on the Emili platform, or in person at the Services Brossard counter, 2001, boulevard de Rome. A lost tag can be replaced for $10.
Why it matters
The tag makes it quick to find the owner of a lost animal. Combined with a microchip, it greatly increases your chances of getting your pet back.
