Lawn Care and Landscaping in Brossard: How to Choose

How to choose lawn care or a landscaper in Brossard: Quebec's pesticide rules, permits and certificates, what a quote should include and red flags.

Updated October 31, 2026 · 3 min read

A healthy lawn and thoughtful landscaping make a home more enjoyable and can add curb appeal. But in Brossard, as everywhere in Quebec, lawn treatment is regulated: many pesticides are banned on grass, and companies that apply them must follow specific rules. Here is how to choose lawn care in Brossard or a landscaper in Brossard, compare quotes and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Lawn care or landscaping: what do you actually need?

Before asking for prices, define the job. Companies in this field often offer very different services:

  • Lawn maintenance: mowing, fertilizing, aeration, top dressing, overseeding, weed and insect control.
  • Landscaping: flower beds, tree and shrub planting, sod installation, edging, retaining walls, outdoor lighting.
  • Seasonal work: spring clean-up, fall leaf removal, winter protection for plants.

Larger projects (cutting down a tree, adding a pool or fence, work near a property line) may also require a municipal permit. Read our guide to tree cutting and pool permits in Brossard and check with the City of Brossard before signing anything.

What Quebec’s pesticide rules say

Quebec’s Pesticides Management Code prohibits a long list of active ingredients on lawns (golf courses excepted). Banned herbicides include all chemical forms of 2,4-D, MCPA and mecoprop, ingredients long used against dandelions. Several insecticides and fungicides are also covered. Biopesticides remain allowed.

The Government of Quebec advises homeowners who hire a lawn or green-space company to:

  • make sure the company holds a valid permit to apply pesticides;
  • ask to see the certificate of the person applying the product (or their supervisor) before any treatment;
  • get a detailed written contract listing planned treatments, why they are needed and the exact products, with their registration numbers;
  • require that the company get your authorization before any pesticide treatment;
  • confirm the company follows the required signage and your municipality’s rules.

General information is available on Québec.ca (search “pesticides”). Municipalities can add their own rules, so check with the City of Brossard as well.

Watering and water management

A healthy lawn depends as much on watering as on treatments. Brossard regulates watering with drinking water, so before programming an irrigation system or laying sod, read our summary of Brossard lawn watering rules. A good landscaper should talk to you about drainage, sun exposure and plant choices that reduce water needs.

What a quote should include

  • The company’s legal name and contact details and, for treatments, its permit number.
  • A list of services, how often they are done and when (spring, summer, fall).
  • The products used, with registration numbers, plus any pesticide-free alternatives offered.
  • For landscaping: a plan or sketch, plant quantities and types, materials, soil preparation.
  • An itemized price, taxes, payment schedule and deposit requested.
  • Warranties on plants and labour, and how green waste will be handled.
  • Renewal and cancellation terms for any seasonal contract.

Red flags

  • A salesperson promising to “kill every dandelion” with a product they won’t name.
  • No permit or certificate shown for pesticide application.
  • A contract that renews automatically without clearly written terms.
  • A treatment done without your prior authorization or without signage.
  • Pressure to sign on the spot, or full payment demanded before work starts.

If a company comes knocking door to door, you can look it up with the Office de la protection du consommateur.

Planning around the seasons

Spring is for clean-up, aeration and seeding; fall suits top dressing, planting and leaf removal. To get rid of yard waste, see our guide to Brossard ecocentres and leaf collection. Before winter, protect shrubs and hedges; our article on how to winterize your home in Brossard can help.

Getting lawn care quotes in Brossard

To compare fairly, ask for at least three written quotes based on the same scope of work. You can describe your project on our free quotes page and receive proposals from contractors serving the South Shore. Take the time to check permits, certificates and the contract before handing over your yard. Planning other work? See our guides to finding an electrician in Brossard or a house painter in Brossard.
