At a glance
- Brossard’s French-language public elementary schools are run by the Centre de services scolaire Marie-Victorin (CSSMV), which also serves Longueuil and Saint-Lambert.
- English-language public schools are run by the Riverside School Board.
- Your child’s school is determined first by your address: this is your “catchment-area school” (école de bassin).
- For 5-year-old kindergarten, the child must be 5 by September 30 of the school year in question.
- A first registration generally requires the child’s birth certificate and proof of residence.
- Access to English public school is governed by the Charter of the French Language: check eligibility on Québec.ca.
Who runs elementary schools in Brossard?
In Brossard, two public bodies share elementary education. The Centre de services scolaire Marie-Victorin (French school service centre) runs the French-language network; according to its 2024-2025 annual report, it serves the school population of Brossard, Saint-Lambert and Longueuil and has 57 preschool and elementary schools across its territory. The Riverside School Board runs the English-language network over a large part of the South Shore.
The school service centre (or school board) sets school catchment areas, the registration calendar and school transportation arrangements. It is therefore the body to contact for any admission question.

A new school in sector C
The City of Brossard transferred land near Boulevard du Quartier and Rue de Châteauneuf for the construction of a new CSSMV elementary school, planned for 8 preschool classes and 24 elementary classes. The CSSMV has published a catchment area for this school, referred to in its documents as school “101 – de la rue de Châteauneuf”. Since the announced opening date has varied between documents, confirm with the CSSMV which school is assigned to your address.
English schools that serve Brossard from outside the city
According to Riverside’s Programs and School Zones 2026-2027 document, some Brossard sectors are also linked to schools located outside the city, including St. Jude, St. Lambert and Greenfield Park International School (French immersion program). The programs offered (English, French immersion, 4-year-old kindergarten) vary from school to school and sector to sector: check Riverside’s zone map before making your choice.
How to find your catchment-area school
Your catchment-area school is the public school associated with your address. Each year, the CSSMV publishes a street index that links each street section (with its civic numbers) to an elementary school and a high school. For 2026-2027, these indexes are available on the CSSMV website. The Riverside School Board publishes an equivalent document organized by Brossard sector (A, B, C, etc.).
Good to know if you’re buying a property: a catchment area can change from one year to the next, especially in growing sectors. Never assume that a house guarantees access to a specific school; check the current index. Registering your child: the process
According to Québec.ca, registration for public school is done with the school service centre or school board for your area. Here are the general steps:
- Check age eligibility. For 5-year-old kindergarten, the child must be 5 by September 30 of the school year. For 4-year-old kindergarten, the child must be 4 by September 30; it is only offered at some schools and a spot is not guaranteed.
- Find your catchment-area school in the CSSMV street index or Riverside’s school zones document.
- Watch for the registration period. For preschool, Québec.ca indicates that registration generally takes place from January to March for the following year; exact dates are set by each school service centre.
- Prepare your documents. For a first registration, the child’s birth certificate and proof of residence are generally required. The exact list may vary: check with the school.
- Complete the registration following the procedure announced by the CSSMV or Riverside (online or at the school, as applicable).
If you want a school other than your catchment-area school, Québec.ca explains that you must submit a request, that priority goes in particular to students who live near the school or who already have family there, and that re-enrolment from one year to the next is not guaranteed. Details are on the Public school registration page. For a child who doesn’t meet the age requirement, see the page on exemptions and exceptional eligibility.
Moving to Brossard during the school year
If your child is changing schools, make sure a spot is available in your new sector and notify the current school. Contact the CSSMV or Riverside as soon as your moving date is known, especially if you need school transportation or the school daycare service.
The right to English public school
In Quebec, public elementary and secondary education is provided in French, except for the exceptions set out in the Charter of the French Language. To register a child at an English school such as Good Shepherd or Harold Napper, you generally need to obtain a certificate of eligibility. The conditions and procedure are explained on Québec.ca’s Eligibility for instruction in English page. Start this process early, as it comes on top of registration.
Frequently asked questions
How many public elementary schools are there in Brossard?
We counted nine French-language CSSMV elementary schools and two English-language Riverside elementary schools located in Brossard, not including the new school in sector C. This number may change: check with the school organizations.
Can I choose a school outside my catchment area?
Yes, you can apply, but acceptance depends on available spots. Students from the catchment area have priority, and school transportation isn’t always provided in that case.
At what age does my child start kindergarten?
For 5-year-old kindergarten, the child must be 5 by September 30 of the school year. 4-year-old kindergarten follows the same logic, with age 4 by September 30, but availability is limited.
What documents do I need to provide?
Generally the child’s birth certificate and proof of residence. The school may ask for other documents; confirm the list before your appointment.
Can my child go to English school?
Only if they are eligible under the Charter of the French Language. The process is described on Québec.ca and is done with the English school or school board.
