Whether you’re coming from Montreal, another Quebec city or abroad, a move to Brossard takes a few weeks of preparation. Here is the complete checklist, step by step.
Two months before
- book movers or a truck, especially around July 1, the busiest moving day of the year in Quebec;
- if you’re buying: estimate the welcome tax and the property taxes;
- if you’re renting: reread your lease and your obligations before leaving your old home;
- register the kids for school or daycare: see the elementary schools, high schools and subsidized daycares.
One month before
- sort your belongings and give away or sell what you don’t want to move;
- arrange the transfer of electricity service and the installation of Internet;
- check your home insurance for the new address;
- plan the cleaning of the old and new homes.
Changing your address
The Service québécois de changement d’adresse (Quebec’s change-of-address service), available on Québec.ca, lets you notify several Quebec government departments and agencies in a single step. Also remember to notify the Canada Revenue Agency and other federal organizations on Canada.ca, as well as your bank, your employer and your subscriptions.
Moving week
- pack an essentials box: documents, medication, chargers, basic tools;
- take photos of the condition of your old home when you leave;
- read the meters if necessary.
Once you’re settled in Brossard
- check the collection calendar for your sector;
- discover Brossard’s sectors and the parks near you;
- plan your trips with the REM and the buses;
- find the clinics and health services.
